2012
10 DAYS
August 19 - August 28 £769
The imperial city of Goslar has a history stretching back for over a thousand years. Its romantic palace, the beautiful old
timber frame buildings, churches and the museums give this town a great historic feeling. The Harz Moutnains, are
Germany’s northernmost mountain range, and one of the finest areas of natural beauty, with its pine covered hills, steep
valleys and half timbered medieval villages this area is rich in legend and fairytales, immortalised by the Brothers Grimm.
We have included wonderful excursions firstly to include Germany’s Fairytale road, to include the towns made famous by
the Brothers Grimm. Kassel is a city in a rural setting, where you can visit its most impressive landmark, the
Willhelmhoehe Gardens, continuing North along the scenic roads to Hamlin, home of the Pied Piper.
Another wonderful day will be to Wernigerode, another beautifully preserved town with spectacular architecture, turrets
and squares. From here we have included a ride on the scenic Harz Narrow Guage Railway, a memorable journey through
some lovely countryside culminating in a great view of the surrounding hills. Another day we will spend travelling through
the hills and woodlands of the Southern Harz, passing along the southern slopes via picturesque villages, stopping in
Nordhausen to visit the schnapps distillery, before arriving in Sangerhausen, Europe’s largest rose garden. On 12.5 hectares
of land roses stretch out for as far as the eye can see, it has 75,000 roses of 8,300 species, which makes it the biggest
collection of roses in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records. Can you imagine the perfume on a warm
sunny day!
Last year we had a group stay in Goslar in the Hotel Baeren, and they loved it. The hotel is in a pleasant and quiet
residential area, just 20 minutes stroll to the historic centre of Goslar. The hotel has its own indoor swimming pool,
sauna, a pleasant sun terrace and lawn area. All bedrooms are spacious, and well furnished and have Sat. TV and hairdryer.
