Hebridean Odyssey
5 DAYS
July 11 - July 15 £536
The Hebrides stand majestically at the northwest edge of Europe, this 150 mile long island chain are a cluster of Jewels
strung together to form a treasure of natural beauty. Freshwater and sea lochs, unsurpassable in their beauty and
abundance, provide a great resourse for fishermen and bird life.
This year, as last year, we have included an extra night in Stornoway instead of 1 night in Inverness on the outward journey.
This will allow us more time to explore Lewis & Harris. We will spend 1 night on the Isle of Benbecula in the Dark Island
Hotel & 3 nights on the Isle of Lewis in the Cabarfeidh Hotel Stornoway. Our outward journey will be direct to Ullapool
to catch the evening ferry to Stornoway arriving in Stornoway at 2020, where we spend the next 3 nights. We will have a late evening dinner on arrival.
Rightly known as 'Stornoway's finest hotel' - the Cabarfeidh (pronounced cab-ar-fay) is a lovely, three star hotel, where
you can relax in comfort, and each bedroom has full ensuite facilities.
The Isle of Harris is actually joined to the Isle of Lewis. Harris has a wide range of landscapes, all of which have their own
charm and interest. On the west coast lie some of the most spectacular beaches of Britain. In the north, the terrain is
rugged, mountainous and has a Lunar feel to it, with huge boulders littered around. The east coast is more isolated and has some of the oldest rocks in the world, being dated at some three thousand million years old. The exposed rocks are a
result of scouring by the glaciers in the Ice Ages. The area is known as ‘The Bays’ because of the many small, quiet inlets.
These inlets are populated by small villages, each with their own unique character. In general, the attraction of Harris is its
peace and tranquillity, the magnificent scenery and beaches, but finally the warmth and quiet confidence of its people. Lewis
is steeped in history and culture, ranging back thousands of years. Ancient stone circles stand on the same land as modern
Stornoway. Gaelic is spoken alongside English, and Eagles live alongside Otters and people. The contrast of the ages and
cultures is experienced all over the Isles of Lewis and Harris both in the towns and out in the hills and mountains. In the
summer months local people can still be seen cutting the peats and in the winter, the distinctive dry smell of the peat fires
drifts in the wind. We have included a local guide who will give us an insight into local life on Harris & Lewis.
We depart Stornoway and catch the 1135 ferry to Berneray, which is approx 1hour, and head towards the isle of
Benbecula, where we will meet our guide, who will give us an afternoon tour of the area. We will check into the Dark
Island Hotel, where we spend our next night. This centrally located hotel in Linclate has spectacular sea views leading to
miles of golden sands. This is a traditional 2 star hotel and each room has TV, Telephone, and furnished in a homely
style, with full en suite facilities. Benbecula in Gaelic is Beinn na Faoghla which means Mountain of the Ford. This is a very
apt name for the island and it's solitary hill, Rueval, which is in fact a stepping stone between North and South Uist. The
islands are connected by a series of causeways.
Our last day, we make our way south over South Uist to Lochboisdale, where we catch the 9.00 am ferry to Oban,
arriving in Oban around 1420, where we make our way home, with some wonderful memories.
