A warm Highland welcome awaits you at the Royal Hotel in Tain. Commanding the most prominent position at the head of the High Street, the Royal Hotel has established a well deserved reputation over many years for great accommodation, fine dining and most importantly, the best of service. The hotel has undergone a major refurbishment programme, and each year this hotel just gets better and better. Passengers who return from this tour rave about the food and the warm welcoming staff & atmosphere. All rooms have en suite facilities including TV, Telephone, Hostess Tray, Radio & Iron.
As we have a lot of passengers who return year after year to this hotel, we have changed our excursion programme to include the stunning Dunrobin Castle and a whisky Distillery visit to no other than Glenmorangie to include a taste of the amber nectar and guided tour.
Dunrobin Castle is the most northerly of Scotland's great houses and the largest in the Northern Highlands with 189 rooms. Dunrobin Castle is also one of Britain's oldest continuously inhabited houses dating back to the early 1300s, home to the Earls and later, the Dukes of Sutherland. The Castle, which resembles a French chateâu with its towering conical spires, has seen the architectural influences of Sir Charles Barry, who designed London’s Houses of Parliament, and
Scotland’s own Sir Robert Lorimer. The Castle was used as a naval hospital during the First World War and as a boys ’boarding school from 1965 to 1972. Dunrobin Castle is on the east coast of the Northern Highlands overlooking the Moray Firth, just north of the villages of Golspie and Dornoch (famous for its cathedral and Royal Dornoch Golf Club).
This is a wonderful visit, which we are sure that everyone will enjoy. Glenmorangie is also an interesting distillery to visit because the whisky is offered in a very wide range of finishes. You may chose from whisky that has been “finished” in avariety of casks e.g. Fino Sherry, Ruby Port, Dry Oloroso, Malmsey Madiera, Claret and even Cote de Beaune red wine.
Unusually for Scotland, the water supply for Glenmorangie is very rich in minerals and this may account for the whisky’s flavour, but then some will argue that the shape of the stills has more influence on flavour. This may indeed be true as the stills at Glemorangie are among the tallest in Scotland and it is claimed that tall stills only allow the lightest spirits to pass.
We will still of course included everybody’s favourit, John O’Groats, following the beautiful coast.
