York is a city steeped in history. Within its well preserved
city walls are many medieval architectural landmarks, of
which the most prominent is the magnificent York Minster.
Together with its Roman remains, the Jorvik Viking Centre
and the national Railway Museum, York offers visitors the
opportunity to step back in time in this beautiful city.
Quaint narrow streets with half timbered houses; shops, pubs,
tea rooms and restaurants; theatres, museums and galleries;
street performers and market traders all help to create a
wonderful atmosphere, which you will warm to whenever you
visit. Located close to the city, within easy access of the North
Yorkshire Moors, Herriot Country, the Newington Hotel
provides an ideal base for visitors. We discovered this beautiful
hotel this year, which like us, is family owned and operated.
Originally built as a terrace of three Georgian Town Houses
with stabling and outhouses. The hotel enjoys panoramic
views over the Knavesmuir Common, part of which forms
the famous York racecourse. The cellar restaurant serves
traditional English fare presented with a hint of modernity.
Each room of course has full ensuite facilities. In the evening
you can relax in the sauna, followed by a dip in the indoor
swimming pool.
We have included in this tour a wonderful river cruise in
York, see for yourself, where Saxons fought Vikings in 1066,
where monks entertained their guests and witches were
ducked in the Middle Ages. Sit on the top deck or retreat to
the warmth of the bar and lounge.
Our other highlight we have included is the beautiful North
Yorkshire Moors Railway journey from Pickering through the
beautiful moors into Heartbeat country to Gothland
(Aidensfield in the film series Heartbeat). Another beautiful
visit we have included is the famous Castle Howard, one of
Britains’ best loved stately homes (Brides Head Revisited).
